  The
  Miami Great E-Skate 2010
The 2010 Great EsSkate was almost a carbon copy of the 2009 Great
EsSkate. Everyone had a wonderful and enjoyable time
that will be fondly remembered. The weather was almost perfect for skating. It
was a bit breezy again for the Sunday morning skate but the wind was at our
backs on the return. Gene Cook did a fantastic job of coordinating everything
for the 300 skaters and all the events. Thanks again
for the great job done by Gene and his volunteers.

Friday afternoon a few of us did the Art Deco skate. It was very interesting and
we learned a lot about the historic South Beach. The Friday evening skate was a
little cool and most all added an extra layer of clothing but soon took it off
as we skated. Dee reported the skate was a pleasant 10.7 miles. The skate was
followed by a dinner party at the Royal Palm Hotel (where most of us stayed).
The dinner was enjoyable and the socializing extraordinary. After dinner many of
us joined Monika at Tequiola Chica’s to have a drink and help her celebrate her
(not to be disclosed) birthday.

Saturday was a pleasant tee shirt day. A few clouds kept most of us from getting
sun burnt. This skate had been redone again to make the route over the lowest
possible bridges. As Dee reported this skate was 20.5 miles, one didn’t need any
high bridge challenges. We skated 3 hours with rest stops. Most rest stops we
were supplied with water, bananas and energy bars. It was a very pleasant and
scenic skate. Following the skate we had a picnic at Lummus Park which was close
to our hotel. Most of us met prior to heading out to dinner to have our group
picture taken. I counted 30 people in the picture. We skipped the expensive
drink at Delano’s Hotel and headed out to have Italian, Mexican, Thai and who
know what dinners. We had free passes to get into the Mansion late nightclub but
didn’t get any great reports about the activities there.

Quite a few of us made the Sunday morning skate. We headed North on Collins Ave
for about 6 miles with the wind blowing against us from the NE. For some reason
it didn’t seem that bad. Must have been the drafting associated with a large
group or just the excitement of the day. Heading back was very enjoyable. Dee
reported we did 15 miles. After the skate most headed for home.
Another memorable Great EsSkate.
